Vanilla Ice Cream

oldfashionedvanillaicecreamNo one has ever been able to put a finger on exactly where or when ice cream was invented. Although reports of the dessert have been curated from China, India, and all over Europe, ice cream as we know it today seems to have been refined and perfected in Renaissance Italy and subsequently diffused to the rest of the continent and beyond.

Since its creation, it has become one of the world's most popular desserts — and one of the most versatile. It can include a complex mix of flavours and ingredients or be as pure as this recipe for old-fashioned vanilla ice cream.

1½ cups sugar
pinch sea salt
2 Tbsp. pure vanilla extract
2 half and half cream

In a large bowl, whisk together all ingredients. Transfer to an ice-cream maker, and freeze following manufacturer's instructions.

Store in an airtight container.

Makes about 2 quarts.
