Beef Stew (Greek Moschari Lemonato)
Moschari Lemonato is a traditional Greek recipe for stewed veal or beef with lemon. It’s a simple preparation and presentation, which is part of the Greek cuisine. To prepare this super easy Greek lemon beef stew recipe all you have to do is just put all the ingredients together and let the pan or slow-cooker do the rest! 2-2½ lbs stewing beef or veal (1-1.2 kg)
2 small red onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
3 lemons, freshly juiced
2 tsp. dried oregano
½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
½ cup dry white wine
sea salt
black pepper, freshly ground
2 Tbsp. fresh thyme
Cut the beef into chunks. Wipe the meat with paper towels.
Heat ½ cup olive oil into a pan, add the beef and sauté on high heat, until the meat is browned and crusty on all sides. Add the chopped onions and garlic and sauté for 2-3 more minutes.
Pour in the wine and wait to evaporate. Add the lemon juice, the oregano and enough hot water just to cover the meat. Season with sea salt and pepper and stir.
Turn the heat down and simmer with the lid on for at least 1-1½ hours.
Serve with mashed potatoes, basmati rice or French fries.
Makes 6-8 servings.
